Leopard's Spaces and Firefox

Technical

Doing some work this afternoon, I noticed something strange...and annoying.

I'm still working out how I want to integrate Spaces into my development workflow, but for now I isolate Eclipse in one "space" (space 4 in a 3x4 grid of spaces) and have Firefox in another (space 1). After making a code change, I Command+Tab to move from Eclipse to Firefox and hit F5 to refresh the page and preview my change. It's a very efficient sequence of keystrokes. Well, it should be. The spaces shift - I'm left looking at my Firefox window - but nothing was changing. I hit F5 and the page just wasn't reloading.

Seems that when using Command+Tab to get to Firefox in another space, the Firefox window doesn't actually get the focus. The application is focused, but the window - the only application window I have open - is not. I have to click on the window before I can interact with my application. I also tried accessing Firefox from other applications in other spaces (e.g. TextEdit, System Preferences, etc.) with the same result. If Eclipse and Firefox are in the same space...no problem. Works exactly as I'd expect.

I don't know whether it's a Firefox problem or a Leopard/Spaces problem, but it certainly reduces my productivity over time.

I'd love to know whether anyone else has noticed the same problem.

oh yes, same problem here. using latest full release firefox versions, etc.

Its really a pain. Safari doesn't have this problem, but I'm not really a safari guy either.

I'd love to know if anyone has a fix.

I've heard there's a package called HyperSpaces (I think that's the name) in development by the guy who wrote VirtueDesktops (a great product in its own right). I have no idea whether this particular issue is "fixable", but I'm looking forward to seeing what he comes out with.

Same problem here. I guess it's a FF problem since no other applications show it. I was googling around to look for a solution when I found your post. I guess we have to wait for some kind of upgrade. It's an annoying issue, fortunately very easy to spot even for the firefox developers! :)

Having the same problem too, and found your page. Glad to hear Justin's report on the beta... guess I'll wait for the final of FF3 before I really start using spaces. Experiment postponed!

I'm also having the same problem. Is also a problem when CMD Tabbing back to Photoshop CS3 - the workspace is missing - only the current layer and the toolbar appear. I wondered if there would have been a solution already?

@Conor

I've noticed some wonkiness with Photoshop Spaces, myself. I don't spend a lot of time in PS, though, so I haven't been able to put my finger on it. Here's what I've done to make Spaces a little more usable for my workflow:

Maybe it - or some part of it - will help someone else.
