What Project Management Tools Do You Use?
Having recently been promoted to lead a pseudo-R&D development team, I'm trying to find a better way of doing things. Specifically (at the moment), project manage-y things. I need to find a better way for developers and business owners to communicate (insert your favorite Office Space quote here). Currently, we use an ad hoc "system" of Word docs and email. I'm looking to introduce a suite of tools to provide the following services:
- Requirements Documentation
- Design Documentation
- General Documentation
- Bug & Enhancement Tracking
- Roadmapping (could be considered 4a, I suppose)
- Project collaboration
Key Requirements:
- Information must be centralized for easy collaboration (read: web-based)
- Must be accessible to international development teams
- Include as few tools as possible
- Must be installed on our corporate servers (no ASP solutions)
I have a reasonable amount of experience with Trac and it's impressed me. Barring something unexpected, I expect to use that for general documentation, ticket tracking and roadmapping. Since it dovetails nicely with Subversion, I've covered a lot of my requirements with one tool. That's good. I've even used Trac's ticket tracker to create and manage requirements, but that's kind of a painful process that I'm not sure I can (or want to) sell the rest of the team on.
I could use some help from anyone reading this. Is there a tool - preferably web-based - that handles requirements and organizes them in such a way that they can easily be checked off and mapped to bugs and design documentation?
I've downloaded ActiveCollab to see how it facilitates project collaboration and it seems pretty strong in many ways, but I don't have a lot of experience with any tools in this sphere. Has anyone used this or other tools they're willing to recommend? I don't need the uber-granular features of something like MS Project, just something that allows me to create, edit and mark tasks complete, track project-centric communications and manage project members.
I'd love to hear what solutions others are using, and in what combination, to manage their projects.
