The Forest and the Trees

Technical

A month or so ago, I wrote about putting together a script to get Adium to take me offline when I've been idle for a certain period of time.  I won't rehash the reasons.  If you're interested, the original post lays it out pretty well.  The title, 'That Annoying AOLSystem Guy', pretty much says it all.

Anyway, the solution I laid out in that post just hasn't been working to my satisfaction.  It wasn't consistent or reliable enough for my liking and it screwed with my screensaver.  In other words, the "solution" was more complicated and less elegant that I wanted.  So I set about to build a better mousetrap.

Over the course of a month or so - on and off - I dug around the internet and wrote partial solutions, but couldn't manage to get something that was just...perfect.  Finally, in a fit of frustration and desperation, I emailed the Adium guys themselves.   And found out that I was blindly ignoring the obvious.  The solution is baked right in.

In the Status preferences, have Adium set your status to Offline after the period of time you choose.  Duh.  Even now, 24 hours and a good night's sleep later, I have absolutely no idea how I missed that for this long.

Thanks for your help, Peter, and for containing the urge to point your finger and laugh at me while you were typing.
