Dina : A Better Monospace Font for Windows
TechnicalFor a long time I've been slightly, maybe even moderately annoyed by the Courier New font in Windows. Not in general, mind you, just when I was coding. It's too wide and it sucks up a lot of real estate in my text editor(s) that I don't want to lose if I can avoid it. Unfortunately, there just weren't any decent monospace alternatives I could find. Not that I spent a lot of time looking.
Then, almost a year ago, I ran across the Dina Programming Font. It's been so long now that I can't even remember exactly how I found it. Maybe a quick Google after a particularly acute attack of that slight annoyance, but who knows at this point. Anyway, it looked nice. It was created by a guy who also didn't like the existing monospace fonts although he appears to have tried more of them than I tried - which is exactly zero (like I said, it didn't bother me that much).
A font created by a coder for coders sounded like just what I was looking for. It even looked like what I knew (at the time) of the primary Mac monospace font, Monaco. Double bonus. I've been using it for long enough at this point to say for certain that I'll try like hell to never go back. It's a terrific font and I'd recommend it to anyone - especially developers.
So why write about it now? Because I just started this blog and, dammit, that's what blogs are for. Maybe someone else is looking for an alternative to Courier New, maybe not, but for damn sure, I'll know where to look next time I need to find it.
